4/13/11 - 16th annual RMS Veterans Salute
Radnor Middle School seventh-grade students visited veterans at Coatesville’s VA Center April 1 for the 16th annual RMS Veterans Salute. It was a rewarding time for the students, teachers, and parent volunteers, and the vets expressed their sincere thanks to the students for their visit.
After the visit, the men also sent a letter to RMS language arts teacher Kris Graham, the trip coordinator who founded this annual community service event, to further echo their appreciation. Kris has been coordinating the event since 1994, when she received a grant from the Radnor Educational Foundation as seed money.
The children sat with vets and spoke with them. They had a packet of information to help them interview a vet if they needed assistance.
There was a rousing bingo game, where prizes won were for the vets – socks, phone cards, baseball caps, and more. The vets also each received goody bags of toiletries and candy from the students.
For lunch, Peace A Pizza donated a variety of pizzas. Students had created placemats with spring, Phillies baseball and patriotic themes. Vets shared stories and words of encouragement for the students.
To round out a great but too short day, the seventh graders read a poem that honored the service done by our fighting forces.
